Currently, all other weight divisions are represented in the men’s Top 10.
We have not seen a Flyweight in the Division Dominance list since Shinichi Kojima, who exited due to his loss to Jussier Da Silva on July 19, 2009. The current #1 (and all-time #1) Flyweight, Mamoru Yamaguchi, isn’t even in sniffing distance of the Top 10. This is mainly due to divisional parity caused by the lack of top-notch matchmaking within the division, Japan’s love of 10-10 rounds, and an increase in Flyweight bouts on American soil with no real direction.
Yamaguchi does have a chance to make a charge at the list as he is expected to take on Jussier da Silva (#8) on August 5. Though, Ian McCall (#4) will be taking on Darrell Montague (#10) within the same card. As Alexis Vila leaves to enter the Bellator Bantamweight division, this may create a 3-headed dragon at Flyweight with Yamaguchi, McCall, and Yasuhiro Urushitani. If McCall and Yamaguchi both were to lose, than the situation further worsens.
Will someone please create a globally important Flyweight tournament?
